‘BREAKING THE CODE’
Limerick School of Art and design (B.A Honours) 2009 Graduate Design Collection
A fashion design collection inspired by the stylized directional male/female symbols found on public bathroom doors universally. These symbols, even though guiding in function, also signify a simplified expression of stereotypical ideas on gender. Taking the shape and stance of the symbols as the starting point, the intent of the collection was to expose and mimic and defunct these rigid ideas on masculinity and femininity. Through the use of form, cut, manipulation, and colour these caricatured ideas were then deconstructed, rearranged and combined, bringing about the construction of a more relaxed silhouette aiding in the overall functionality of the garments.
